Voice of the Sea Episodes

Voice of the Sea, an original, half-hour television series, will air episodes featuring traditional navigation and voyaging with appearances from Hōkūle‘a crewmembers.

In one episode, “Voyaging Experts Talk Story”, Voices of the Sea goes onboard three historic voyaging canoes—the Hōkūle‘a, the Alingano Maisu, and the Moʻokiha o Piʻilani. Viewers will learn about the equipment, materials, and crew members onboard to see what makes each canoe unique.

In another episode, “Polynesian Voyaging Canoes”, Voices of the Sea talks with voyaging canoe builders, navigators, and captains from Hawai’i and Micronesia: Ka’iulani Murphy, Sesario Sewralur, and Tim Gilliom. These heroes share their stories and pass on knowledge to the next generation.

Voice of the Sea is produced in partnership with the University of Hawaii Sea Grant Center for Marine Science Education and the Curriculum Research & Development Group. The innovative half-hour TV Voice of the Sea series presents global issues in a local context, incorporating traditional knowledge and cultural practices into the STEM canon.

“Voyaging Experts Talk Story” will air on KFVE Channel 5 and Channel 1005 on November 22nd and December 27th at 6 pm. “Polynesian Voyaging Canoes” aired on November 15th and will re-air on December 13th. Episodes are also available online on UH Sea Grant’s webpage.
