Ua Ao Kaiwiʻula: Celebrating ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, Wayfinding and Culture

Aloha, we are joining up with our friends over at the Bishop Museum to present an evening of wayfinding and culture. Come meet up with crewmembers from the Polynesian Voyaging Society and learn how voyagers use the Hawaiian Star Compass to navigate vast distances using only natural elements. We hope you’ll join us at this free family-friendly event!

Date: Saturday, July 27, 2019
Hosted by Bishop Museum in partnership with Kamehameha Schools
Time: 4-9 p.m.
The Great Lawn at Bishop Museum

Bishop Museum and Kamehameha Schools are proud to host the 2nd Annual Ua Ao Kaiwiʻula: Celebrating ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, Wayfinding and Culture on Saturday, July 27, 2019 on the Great Lawn at Bishop Museum.

The event is meant to educate, celebrate and inspire through Hawaiian cultural identity and the history and place of Kaiwiʻula, where Kamehameha Schools began and home of Bishop Museum. Education and community organizations, Polynesian Voyaging Society, Native Hawaiian Charter Schools, Paʻi Foundation and other organizations will provide programming and the museum exhibits will be open to the public.

This year’s event seeks to increase exposure of Native Hawaiian families to ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, ʻIke Hawaiʻi and Nohona Hawaiʻi by leveraging interest in a Digital Media Festival highlighting Native Hawaiian and local, student produced short films. The event will highlight digital media and arts as career pathways. The event will engage local practitioners, entertainers, schools and partner programs in providing demonstrations, activities, crafts, and programming that highlights resources available to families that work to increase Native Hawaiian success in education, wellbeing, and sense of identity.

The event will conclude with a viewing of the feature film AQUAMAN. Special guest appearance from Kekoa Kekumano, featured in AQUAMAN, as well as more!

The event will be free to the public, food available for purchase, and allow free access to other exhibits at the Bishop Museum for families to explore. We are expecting over 2,500+ attendees.
