Hana is from the Island of Hawaiʻi and first crossed paths with Hōkūleʻa in Maunalua, Oʻahu, during the 2013 Statewide Sail. “I paddled out with Hui Nalu Canoe Club, and when Hōkūleʻa came around Kawaihoa point I felt like I was seeing both Hawaiʻi’s past and future alive in that moment--I was hooked,” Hana remembers. “Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia not only serve as bridges across centuries, connecting us to ancestral knowledge, practices, and wisdom, but also as bridges across cultures, connecting us to communities all over the world and unifying us in our shared kuleana to mālama honua. Our waʻa remind us of our connection to the stars, the land, the ocean, and to each other. We are all sailing into the same shared future, and Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia help us learn how to overcome great challenges and shape that future together.”
Hana hopes that the many voyages of Hōkūleʻa and her descendant canoes throughout the Pacific inspire cultural pride and preservation while helping to create a more sustainable future for the keiki. Hana dreams that someday there will be an abundance of voyaging canoes sailing the seas.
While at sea, Hana loves being surrounded by endless stars and water. Back on land, she channels these experiences into her art.
