Dr. Thomas is an Emergency Physician in Kailua, O'ahu and serves as Medical Officer on the canoe. He has been the President of the Hawai'i Emergency Physicians Associated since 1998 and is responsible for managing 44 emergency physicians, contracting with six hospitals on O'ahu and Hawai'i Island. He currently serves as Vice President of the Aloha Medical Mission, Medical Director of the Honolulu Police and Fire Departments and as clinical faculty at the University of Hawaii’s John A. Burns School of Medicine. Dr. Thomas is co-author of three medical books addressing environmental injuries in Hawaii. Life aboard Hōkūleʻa is unlike anything Dr. Thomas has experienced and he appreciates the way the canoe and her crew attune themselves to the subtle variations in nature while out at sea. The wonders of the voyage never cease to amaze him - from clear nights full of constellations to bright moons and bioluminescent organisms.
