Darienne Dey, from both Oahu and Washington State, first met Hōkūleʻa in 2011 and took her first sail aboard Hikianalia in Oct. of 2012. To Darienne, Hōkūleʻa is a constant reminder for her to continually strive for lōkahi (unity/harmony) on and off the waʻa with others and within herself. She considers herself lucky to live in a time where it is not considered to cross the ocean by choice and in doing this she honors those who came before, while expressing her dearest hopes for those who will continue the legacy. During this voyage she hopes as many people as possible will get to meet the waʻa and the crewmembers because she wants everyone to be able to experience the mana of the waʻa. She hopes everyone can be inspired. While on this leg of the journey, her biggest craving will be ice cubes and being able to lie perfectly still without rocking, but when she returns she will miss the simplicity of life at sea and feeling humbled by the awesome power and beauty of mother nature.
