Mālama Honua Service Day – World Peace and Prayer Day 2017
June 21, 2017Free
June 21, 2017 marks the 22nd year of World Peace and Prayer Day, also referred to as Honoring Sacred Sites Day. World Peace And Prayer Day is an international and intergenerational celebration for people of all faiths, nations, races, ages and genders who share concern for the welfare of humanity and the Earth. This year, global delegates will gather in Hawaiʻi for ceremony, cultural presentations, discussions, storytelling and wisdom sharing sessions on the days leading up to the Solstice, June 18, 19 and 20th. For more information on the gathering, please visit http://worldpeaceandprayerday.com/about/
In commemoration and recognition of this special day, Polynesian Voyaging Society, Nainoa Thompson and Hōkūleʻa extend an invitation to all to bring a flower as a symbol of aloha for Hōkūleʻa to offer to our sacred space, our ocean. Flowers will be collected while we are at the Convention Center, from June 18th through June 20th. On June 21st, Hōkūleʻa and her crew will head to sea to scatter these flowers in aloha to the world.
We ask everyone to take time on June 21st to aloha and mālama a site sacred to you – be it mountain, or stream, or beach, or community, find a way to take action to mālama honua and share our aloha with the generations that will be gathered for this special day.
Many of our community partners have risen to the occasion and are creating opportunities for community members to join this Mālama Honua Service Day. Please check listings on Hokulea.com, ConservationConnections.org, 808 Cleanups, and Travel 2 Change to find an event near you to join, and help grow the mālama honua movement!
