Starr was born and raised in Kailua and Waimānalo and currently resides in Kaimukī, Oʻahu. She first fell in love with Hōkūleʻa in the third grade and began volunteering for PVS in high school packaging food for the Rapa Nui voyage. Since then, she has participated in dry docks as well as coastal and inter-island sails. She taught high school social studies at Hakipuʻu Learning Center for 7 years and is currently teaching at Punahou School.
To Starr, the significance of Hōkūleʻa cannot be overstated. It launched a cultural renaissance in Hawaiʻi and serves as a symbol of pride for indigenous people all over the world. As we head into the 21st Century, Hōkūleʻa and PVS continue to forge a path of inquiry and discovery while simultaneously helping us to make deeper connections with the past. She is humbled, honored and feels blessed to have the opportunity to serve as a crewmember on the Worldwide Voyage.
