Mike was a member of Na Koa o Pu'ukohola Heiau when he participated in a ceremony for the koa tree that was traditionally carved into the sailing canoe Mauloa. From that ceremony, he and his father joined the educational organization Na Kalai Wa'a Moku o Keawe which is dedicated to the perpetuation of cultural values and practices of voyaging in Hawai'i. Mike has been involved in PVS ever since and has made many open ocean voyagaes including the voyaging canoe Makali'i's maiden voyage to Tahiti.

To Mike, Hōkūleʻa represents the bravery and courage of our ancestors, the incredible strength of the Polynesian People today, and a solid foundation for the next generation to remember who they are and learn what values will be the most important for the future of Hawai'i and the Earth.
