Mike, nicknamed Irish, is a Mechanical Engineer and owner of a mechanical contracting firm, Doonwood Engineering. Being so hand, on the canoe he helps to maintain and repair the electrical and mechanical systems. Irish first sailed on Hōkūleʻa in the early 2000's on an inter-island sail to Maui but his first experience with Hōkūleʻa was in 1976 when he climbed on a roof to glimpse her sailing home from her maiden voyage to Tahiti. He looks forward to the challenges and rewards of ocean voyaging, including leaving his professional responsibilities on shore. While not sailing, Irish enjoys sailboat racing and maintaining a fishing camp in Alaska.
