Ma'ulili first became involved with the Polynesian Voyaging Society in 1976. At the time, Ma'ulili was an active canoe paddler participating in many races across Hawai'i's channels. Because of his canoe and ocean experience, Ma'ulili was invited to sail on inter-island trips on Hōkūleʻa leading up to the 1978 voyage. He sailed on the 1992 No Na Mamo voyage from Hawai'i to Tahiti and was a member of the 'Cowboy Crew', a group of Hōkūleʻa crewmembers from Hawai'i Island who were known for their backgrounds in ranching and ability to wrangle materials to repair the wa'a when needed. For Ma'ulili, Hōkūleʻa has touched all the communities of Hawai'i and extends their aloha around the globe through the Worldwide Voyage. He hopes that by joining the Worldwide Voyage, crewmembers will increase their knowledge of not only sailing but also of the world around us. When returning to land, Ma'ulili looks forward to reuniting with his loved ones, his taro plants and the horse power in his cowboy truck.
