Kawika has been sailing since 1997, mostly on inter-island sails, until his first deep sea voyage from Rapa Nui to Tahiti in 1999. He sails in the wake of many of his family members who have also been a part of the sailing 'ohana who have been instrumental in his voyaging. To Kawika, Hōkūleʻa is looked at and treated as a kupuna in the eyes and hearts of her 'ohana.
