Crew Profile: Kaniela Hoku Lyman-Mersereau

PVS Member Since 2008

HOMETOWN: Honolulu, Hawaii
PRIMARY DUTY: Education Specialist
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES: Rescue swimmer and crewmember
Kaniela Lyman-Mersereau, from Mānoa, Oahu, grew up listening to stories from his parents and aunties and uncles about their experiences while on Hōkūleʻa. Their stories shaped and made who Kaniela was going to grow up to be and to create stories of his own.

To Kaniela, Hōkūleʻa represents a living symbol that tells the past, present and future of what it is to be part of the Hawaiian Islands. To him, Hōkūleʻa is the wind that clears the sky to reveal the stars and it is the wings of a bird far away from home, doing what she needs to do before she returns home.

As he sets sail for this leg, he hopes to see the goals that have been put forth accomplished in the communities they visit. He would like to be that part of that goal that raises awareness to global sustainability issues and to see the next generations step up and come together from all nationalities and all walks of life to care for our Island Earth (home).
