Kalani first encountered Hōkūleʻa when she sailed into Makua Bay with Iz Kamakawiwoʻole aboard. Kalani swam out with many others to great Hōkūleʻa and was asked to check the anchor by a crewmember on board. "I haven't let go of the rope yet, still hanging on," said Kalani.
While sailing, Kalani appreciates learning about other cultures and giving gifts, listening to the sound of the wind blowing off the sails, and talking story with his crew. Back home, Kalani enjoys diving, surfing, paddling and spending time with his 'ohana.
