Attwood started training on Hōkūleʻa in 1975 at age 22. To him, Hōkūleʻa is his mother, the captain and navigator are his father and and Hōkūleʻa's many crewmembers are his siblings. Through the Worldwide Voyage, Attwood hopes that Hawaiians will be better prepared for the future, both with more experience sailing on wa'a kaulua (double hulled canoes) and more knowledge of how to take care of the 'āina (land). He is honored to sail in the wake of the many great natvigators and peace-seekers that have come before him. At sea, Attwood misses his 'ohana (family) back on land. While back on land, he misses his 'ohana from the canoe.
