Moananuiākea Voyage – Leg 8: San Francisco to Ventura

Bio

ʻIliahiʻs first experience on a waʻa kaulua was on Hikianalia for a training sail in 2017. His first leg on the Moananuiākea Voyage is on Hōkūleʻa, which he calls “a beacon that connects me to my ancestors and that builds a foundation to perpetuate my culture - O ke kahua ma mua, ma hope ke kūkulu.”

ʻIliahi is a teacher at Farrington High School and says on this voyage he looks forward to “making connections with other indigenous cultures and being able to share these experiences with my ʻohana and my students.” He says “Iʻm just honored to have this opportunity to take part in this voyage, and Iʻm inspired to be around and learn from all the crew members that I get to sail with.”

When ʻIliahi is out at sea he most misses “being able to hug and kiss my wife and children every day, especially before they go to bed.” And when heʻs at home, what he says he misses about being at sea are the “beautiful sunrises and sunsets, and the calmness of the night underneath the vastness of the stars.”
